Nieman Reports…

Recently I have read an artice “What’s old can new again – assisted be digital media” by Steve Buttry that you can read on http://bit.ly/dlaIyy. I also have read another one very interesting article that is “An explosion promts rethinking of twitter and facebook” by Courtney Lowery which you can see on  http://bit.ly/djiFyV.

Firstly, I want to discuss the first one article where Steve Buttry remembers the times when he worked for the newspaper that was really similar to the twitter because mostly it has contained information about what people were doing. Actually, I have never known that newspapers could post such information in their news. I think that nowadays journalists don’t write such articles. Maybe, Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter, got an idea to create such site after reading such newspapers. You can read article about him in the Los Angeles Times following that link http://lat.ms/2OdvT. I think that every business should always make innovations or it will lose the market. In 1990’s most reporters didn’t think about creating their mails, newspapers didn’t think about using internet to post their articles there. However, nowadays almost every newspaper has its own site. Christopher Freeman, famous economist and professor of Science Policy, stated that “not to innovate is to die.”  I think that many newspapers who didn’t start to use the internet and media in their business didn’t survive and nobody remembers it now. I really like that Steve Buttry doesn’t stand at one point and always go ahead. I like his ideas. He doesn’t live with the past, he looks for the future. I also like his blog here http://stevebuttry.wordpress.com/.

Courtney Lowery states in her article that social media tools give lot of opportunities to the journalists. For instance, Twitter can be a good source of news. Moreover, social media gives possibility to have a conversation with the readers. Journalists can receive a feedback from their readers. Furthermore, there are millions of people using social sites and the amount of them is growing day by day!

In my opinion, social media is the future of journalism. All journalists should serve the internet for the data about how using social sites for their career. Everyone should innovate. Innovation is the key of success!

Journalism’s Place in Social Media: Blogs, Tweets, Social Media and News Business

Nowadays, news spread very quickly throughout the world. There is no borders to it. You can know what has happened hundred thousands miles from in just one minute. Internet and Telecommunication give lot of opportunities to spread news. You can know news from social sites, blogs, tweets and etc. Moreover, people don’t pay attention who is the provider of the news. In the past, only journalists provided people with the news in the newspapers, on TV.

In my opinion, journalists sometimes don’t tell people the truth because of corruption. Some people don’t want to show people the truth and they pay money for that. Moreover, journalists very often try to provide audience with the information that can cause the sensation and write sometimes very enormous news just to attract people. Mostly, I try not to believe to every news I hear.   Journalists has lost their credibility. In Nieman report I read that the job of the journalist is “to keep an eye on the public interest.” I think that all journalists should keep an integrity and be ethical to other people. Journalist should remain a person with the real heart and sympathy to other people. Sometimes, they don’t think about feelings of other people and write lot of awful information about them.

However, I think that to be a journalist is a very hard work especially nowadays with the technological development.  Robert Picard in his article “Blogs, Tweets, Social Media, and the News Business” discusses which types of new technologies has the most positive outcome for the journalism. For instance, social tools like e-book reader, podcasts can bring news organization more money than social tools like PDA news reports because they have more involvement with the extended contact. However, relationships with the audience can be improved by using social tools with personal interaction such as blogs and discussion boards.

In my opinion, social tools create benefits not only for simple users but also for journalists.  As Robert Picard states social media gives opportunity to the users to express their feelings, opinions. They can also find people with similar interests and connect with them. Moreover, they don’t need to have a special education to write articles. Also it’s not so difficult to become a member of a blog, social network, discussion board and etc. Moving to the journalists, I want to mention that they can find lot of useful information there. Also they can get new ideas… I think that for all people using social tools can be very beneficial.

My experience with Twitter and Facebook

This year I had my first experience with the Twitter. I heard about it several times but I have never had an idea to join it.  Everything on it was new for me. Twitter is not similar to social sites, weblogs… Moreover, the most amazing thing for me was the limitation of signs in our posts. There are only 140 signs you can use there. You should be able to express your opinion and feelings with only 140 characters. For the first time, it was a little bit hard, but very soon I got accustomed with it. There I follow some of my friends and I also began to follow tweets that are connected with yoga. For instance, it includes yoga peace, yoga journal, yoga guide and etc. These tweets give me new information about yoga, provide me news, surveys, trends about yoga. I can find lot of useful information there. Moreover, I am following Swami Satchidananda there. He was one of the founder of integral yoga. I really like his quotes about our life. For instance, one of his quotes was “Yogis enjoy life because they know how to live in the world without getting caught in it”.

Now, I would like to turn to the social site that is Facebook. I can’t remember when I firstly began to use it but I used it mostly to write and answer messages. However, after I have taken NITs course I began to visit groups that are connected with my interests. It’s very easy to find groups that are close to your interests. Moreover, you can find people with similar interests as yours in these groups. You can watch video, see photos there…Moreover, you can discuss some topics you are interested in there. You can find lot of useful information there. You can invite your friends to the groups you like. Facebook gives us lot of opportunities. One of the pages I like there is PwC Almaty careers. This is one of the world wide auditor company. They post their vacancies on the Facebook. It can be very useful for my career because my major is in accounting and auditing. Sometimes, you don’t check official sites of the companies or look for vacancies at newspapers and etc. However, on Facebook you can always  see all news of pages you like. I also began to be a fan of pages connected with yoga. It’s very useful for me because I can find lot of new information there. Moreover, I can discuss there all topics referred to my interest.

I think that I’ve gotten a very good experience with the Facebook and Twitter this year.

Facebook for Lawyers

Nowadays, social networks are popular not only for communication but also for business purposes. Social netwoks are very good for marketing, advertisement. I think that any company that offers services can effectively use these new type of information technologies. There are lot of people who use Facebook all over the world and it becomes popular day by day. Facebook is used by journalists, marketing companies, PR managers and etc.

However, in this post I want to concentrate more on lawyers because I think that Facebook can be very useful for lawyers. “Lawyers who are not on Facebook are missing out on critical opportunities to network for referrals, research defendants and potential jury members, market their law firms, and vet potential legal hires and current associates.” If you are a lawyer and you have doubts whether to use Facebook or not for your job just visit http://lawyerist.com/facebook-101-why-lawyers-should-be-on-facebook/ and maybe you will change your mind 😉

Your Friendship Networks (Chapter 10)

Nowadays, every person builds his own friendship networks.  But how he or she builds it? Why only special types of people are included there? How he or she chooses friends? What is the purpose of building friendship networks? People very rarely ask themselves these questions, they build networks without thinking whether they really need it or not. Our government has a big influence on our social connections, it brings people together, changes our social networks…

There are four types of networks that are isolate, individualistic, enclaved and hierarchical. Isolate and hierachical networks depicts more bilateral ties, while other two types of networks belong to the multilateral ties.

The government tries to influence our networks by making special trainings for unemployed people. It creates lot of community development programs. So people with the same interests or problems are shaped into one network. It is not clear whether it is good or bad that government has impact on our social life but I think that it in some points it’s good and in other  points not. In my opinion, people should decide by themselves how to build their social networks.

Is it a good idea to use Facebook for PR?

Nowadays, there are so many opportunities to conduct the business. You can open your own business even without inventory, property, plant and equipment. You just need computer and the internet. There are so many online shops, magazines and etc. So internet is the most popular tool people use in their business. However, some people use internet only for communication or to express their opinion, to share their life experience with other people. They use websites and programs like Facebook, Vkontakte, Twitter, ISQ, Skype and etc. However, some people find the way to use these sites and tools in business purposes. For example, journalists can use these sites as a source for their articles, advertisers use it to promote products and etc. But I want to concentrate on Facebook and PR in this post.

Firstly, what is PR? Public relations is a field that helps to build a good public image for business, different type of organizations, politicians, celebrities and etc. It helps to improve good relations with the target audience. PR build goodwill for the company that is very important and useful for all organisations. Bad reputation can destroy the whole company and it’s very difficult to rebuild good image. So PR is a very useful field for all companies, different type of organizations, politicians and etc. Tools that are used in PR include media relations, newsletters, special events…

Secondly, what is Facebook? I think that nowadays almost every person is familiar with the Facebook that is a social network where people can create their accounts, communicate with other people, join groups by interests…Media survey that was made in 2010 by Barbara Rozgonyi showed that 49% PR specialists use Facebook to target journalists. Moreover, this research showed that 79% of journalists have their own profile on Facebook. More information about this survey you can find if you follow this link http://wiredprworks.com/2010/04/media-survey-journalists-pr-social-media/.

How you can use Facebook for PR? Well, you can find there PR friends and discuss with them your ideas, new trends and etc.  Moreover, you can promote your organisation there by creating a group about your company and invite people to join it. Facebook helps to build credibility. People all over the world can join your group or become your friend there. For instance, Coca-cola has created its fan page there (http://www.facebook.com/cocacola). There are 14 478 307 people who follow this page that is a really huge number. But if you still have doubts whether to use Facebook for PR or not just visit http://blog.journalistics.com/2010/facebook-for-public-relations/.

Participate on www.kino.kz! ;-)

Yesterday, I was in the cinema watching “Legends of the Guardians”. That was a really interesting and exciting cartoon. I advice you to watch it when you have free time. While I was sitting in the cinema I remembered that our Professor for NITs course gave us an assignment to write a blog with the analysis of the site we want to discuss. However, I didn’t have an idea what site to choose. So in the cinema I had an idea to choose Kazakhstani site with the schedule of all films in the cinemas. I think that many people use this site when they want to go to the cinema. I remember old times when we didn’t have an internet and we always called to the cinema to know the schedule. It was very inconvinient because sometimes nobody answered you, sometimes the phone was busy. It was very time consuming. However, nowadays you can just visit one site and see the schedule of all cinemas in Kazakhshtan. I think that there is only one site to do that and the address of this site is http://www.kino.kz 😉

This site gives an opportunity to the visitors to participate by posting comments about movies and voting for the movies. It’s very easy for the audience to participate on that site. You just need to enter your name, mail and comment to leave an opinion on http://www.kino.kz.  Ranking is posted immediately. However, the moderators of this site has restricted policy on the comments because of the increasing irrelevant, ignorant and illiterate comments. So now if you want to be your comment on this site you need to follow their rules which you can read there. Moreover, this site need a low level of participation because you can leave your comment only once there and you don’t need to registrar.  However, when you put your comments regularly you can build a reputation and can be well-recognized by other users. The site falls into open exclusive  category of openness. The main information is put there by the owners of the site and audience adds additional information through the comments. Moreover, this site has its own forum where you can discuss topics concerning movies, cinemas.

I like this site. There you can find schedule of movies, description of films, prices of tickets. But the most valuable information is comments of the audience. It’s very useful because sometimes synopsis of the movie can be very interesting however when you watch it you become disappointed of the film. So after reading comments you can make more accurate decision whether to go the movie or not.  In conclusion, audience participation can make site more popular and useful for the users.
